Both of these centre primarily around surreal, oftentimes outright sadistic“comedy” involving the punishment of the main character. While there’s a little bit of everything in the GoAnimate subculture, as far as I can tell there’s a single major category of videos that is primarily made: “grounded” videos. I decided I should dig deeper into this culture, in hopes of finding out what exactly these bizarre video-artists are trying to achieve, why they do it, and maybe even figure out the history of the phenomenon.įor clarity, I feel I should explain the typical structure of these videos. But after finding this culture of people creating odd “animations” with a very limited tool, I found myself confused, amused, and most strangely, absolutely mesmerized.

I’ve often compared YouTube Poops and the post-ironic mutation memes that have been made of Bee Movie and LazyTown to the Dadaist anti-art perpetuated by artists like Marcel Duchamp. Sometimes it’s by means of nostalgia and recontextualisation of older media, as is intentionally achieved with the vaporwave music scene and unintentionally done long prior to that with the logo culture and the odd phenomenon of “VHS opening” videos and sometimes it’s by odd post-Dadaist undercurrents. In my time as a self-described amateur Internet anthropologist, I’ve found that Internet culture’s n ooks and crannies often provide (sometimes unintentional) genius.
